East African sports ministers prepare joint bid to host 2027 African Cup of Nations

Sports ministers from Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda gathered here on Friday to discuss a joint bid to host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

A statement from Tanzania's Ministry of Culture, Arts and Sports said the ministerial meeting was held before the Confederation of African Football (CAF) executive committee announced the successful applicants. The announcement is scheduled to be made on September 27, 2023 at CAF headquarters in Cairo, Egypt.

The East African country faces bids from Senegal and Botswana, the statement said.

Tanzania’s Minister of Culture, Arts and Sports Damas Ndumbaro expressed confidence in the joint bid. “The sports infrastructure we have makes us qualified to host the continental football championship,” Ndubaro said. He further mentioned that the three countries are also upgrading other infrastructure required for the event.

Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda have never had the privilege of hosting the Africa Cup of Nations. They are optimistic about a successful 2027 bid.
